what do you need when travelling with a baby

Travelling with a baby

Here’s a situation:

You are a new parent. You used to love traveling, but are now hesitant to do it because of the changes in your life brought about by parenthood. How could you enjoy traveling if you have a baby to take care of? How could you continue doing your old habits when you aspire to be a hands-on parent? Sure, you can bring your baby with you; but what if a lot of mishaps happen?

Here’s good news, new parent! Yes, you can travel with your baby; and yes, it is possible to have fun with your little one! Sure, your child might feel hungry from time and again; and he/she might not feel comfortable about the new environment. For this, you would need to make some necessary preparations beforehand. Below are some tips to know when traveling with your little one:

Your essentials

But before packing your baby’s things, secure your essentials first. Bring cash, or credit, debit and ATM cards- you don’t want to get caught penniless during the trip. Don’t forget your passports or if driving, your driver’s license. The same goes for your health and travel insurance documents and airplane tickets. Keep your address or phone book, as well as hotel or car reservation numbers.

What should I pack for travelling

Baby supplies

Pack a lot of clothes as you don’t want to be caught needing a pair or two on the road. Allot two to three outfits per day, plus an extra. Bring a sweater or jacket to warm your baby when you are going to a cooler climate.

Is a diaper bag considered a carry on

How many diapers do you need to bring? In order to have enough during the entire travel, allocate a diaper for each hour that you’ll be on the road. You could also bring more in case your flight gets delayed.

Bring disposable changing pads that you can put under your newborn during diaper changes. You can buy these at supermarkets and baby stores. Diaper rash can appear anytime during the trip so you need to have a small tube of diaper rash ointment.

Bring a few blankets as well as you’ll find these handy when covering your baby or protecting your clothes from burps. Baby wipes not only help you clean baby bottoms but also clean the face, hands and even spills. You may opt for disposable bibs instead of carrying totally dirty ones. Also include in your newborn checklist for travel cloth diapers that can serve as burp clothes for cleaning spills.

How do I keep my baby safe while travelling

Avoid outside foods

Don’t rely on food outlets on the way- One of the biggest problems that can arise is when kids get hungry, and there isn’t another stop for some time. It can also mean stopping more frequently than you want to, not to mention add up to be quite expensive. It’s a great idea to pack a number of snacks that you can easily reach and give to your children when they get hungry. Also pack drinks and even lunch so as to avoid having to stop for restless little ones in the back.

Make a practice

Practice driving with them- If your children aren’t used to riding in the car for long periods of time, it’s a good idea to go for a few ‘longer than usual’ drives to help them get used to being in the car. It can often be hard for them to go from only going on very short trips to taking their first 10 hour road trip.

Make sure your baby is given a flu shot.

Babies are prone to getting sick, especially when exposed to different elements. Hence, it would be wise to have your child vaccinated before traveling. You should prioritize your child’s health above anything else.

Be in the know of what you should expect.

Having a baby with you, you should expect that delays can happen. Be positive about it and make necessary adjustments. Remember that if it’s hard for you to look after a baby, it’s much harder for your child to adjust in a new environment and express how he/she feels.

Bring all the things needed, but don’t over pack.

Clothes, pacifiers, milk, feeding bottles, diapers, and baby wipes – these are the typical needs of a baby that you should bring with you when you travel. A three-day supply is enough, for you can surely buy more diapers, wipes, and milk. You can also wash your clothes. Over packing will cause a lot of inconvenience for you and your baby.

Bring emergency medications

In case someone isn’t feeling well you don’t want to be in the middle of nowhere trying to find a chemist. Keep some medicine to sooth a headache, fever and cough to ensure if your child is feeling sick, you have everything you need close at hand.

Always bring your baby’s stroller.

You should always bring a stroller with you when you travel. Using this baby equipment can give a lot of convenience to you and your child. There will be various situations when you will need to place your baby in a buggy.

Dress your baby simply.

You know that you might need to change your child’s diaper during travel; hence it pays to place on simple clothes or pajamas. You wouldn’t want to spend a long time taking off your child’s “complicated” clothes, and placing them on again.

Keep your little one groomed all the time by bring toiletries like brush, shampoo, soap and nail clippers.

Carrying your infant is easier if you have a sling or front carrier. You should find this handy if you are in crowded areas like airports. If you are traveling by car, don’t forget the car seat and car seat pillow to support your baby’s head during the entire trip. A collapsible stroller is also a necessity, something that can be stored in the overhead bin.

To avoid missing out on important items, start packing a few days before you hit the road. Cross out from the list the things you have packed. Pack your baby’s outfits in separate bags to spare you from the hassle of hunting around for smaller items like socks.

Don’t forget to bring your camera as well as battery charger and spare memory card.

There you have it; the tips to remember when traveling with your little one. With your love for your baby, you can surely manage to enjoy taking him/her on the road. As a good parent, you wouldn’t mind all the delays that might happen. You wouldn’t mind attending to your child’s needs, even if it costs a lot of time. You just have to keep a positive mindset, and everything else will be okay. Moreover, having a baby should not necessarily stop you from doing what you love. Just make necessary adjustments and prioritize the welfare of your child.

Thank you, Happy journey
